2019 was an emotional year for the world’s electronic dance music (EDM), from the unfortunate departure of Keith Flint to the impression of 15-year-old Tomorrowland’s birthday and the moment of Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike’s returning to the DJ Mag’s top 100 DJs.
- Tomorrowland Winter Officially Launches
The opening event of 2019 is the debut of Tomorrowland Winter – the winter version of Tomorrowland which takes place from March 9 to 16, 2019. The cold of the Alpe d’Huez (France) snow range is not a problem for 25,000 ravers from all over the world to enjoy the music of Armin van Buuren, DJ Snake, Martin Garrix, … Tomorrowland Winter 2020 will return from March 14 to 21, 2020.
2. Ultra Music Festival Miami 2019 Is A Big Disappointment
Perhaps the successful debut of Tomorrowland Winter was one of the reasons why many fans were disappointed with Ultra Music Festival Miami. The rest is simply because Virginia Key is not the ideal place to hold one of the world’s top festivals when constantly encountering unnecessary problems. Hopefully, when held at the familiar Bayfront Park venue in 2020, Ultra Miami will return to its status.
3. Keith Flint’s Passing Away
On March 4, 2019, the world electronic music lost a legend as Keith Flint – a member of the group The Prodigy, owner of immortal music tracks such as: “Firestarter”, “Breathe”, “Omen” passed away …With his punk aesthetic of piercings, spiked hair and intense stare, Flint became one of the UK’s most iconic musical figures in the 1990s. He joined the Prodigy as a dancer, later becoming a frontman alongside rapper Maxim. His music products will surely live forever in the hearts of electronic music lovers.
4. Avicii’s Heritage Are Connected
Avicii’s dedication to the world of electronic music is undeniable and his unfinished legacy has been followed by Avicii’s artists, friends, family and millions of fans from all over the world.
On Dec 5th, the world was able to witness a tribute concert to the famed Avicii. The event which was organized by The Time Berling Foundation had taken place in Stockholm Sweden, in order to honor him and to also spread awareness.
5. Shows of Swedish House Mafia
Swedish House Mafia’s shows are the most mentioned topic in 2019 with conflicting emotions. Rumor had it that the trio would appear at Tomorrowland 2019 which made fans really eager, but then fans got total disappointment as it did not come true.
6. Tomorrowland Celebrates 15th Anniversary At Ziggo Dome
Marking the 15-year milestone, Tomorrowland has brought a memorable festival by reenacting all the Tomorrowland periods this year with particularly impressive performances such as: Eric Prydz’s Epic Holosphere sphere, staging Symphony of Unity symphony or 15-year recap of music set by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Steve Aoki and friends.
7. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike Back To The Kingdom
Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike have won this year’s DJ Mag Top 100 DJs poll. The duo return to the top spot after winning in 2015, toppling three-time winner Martin Garrix.
Beyond the EDM controversy, the Top 100 has been criticised for not accurately representing the diversity of the global dance music scene. There is a noticeable lack of women, Black and non-Black POC DJs in the poll — in 2019, over 90% of the people in the list were white, and over 90% were male.
